How To Properly Pack Silverware For A Move

Silverware is both a functional part of your kitchen and a valuable possession, if it is actually made out of real silver. In fact, many silverware sets have been handed down within families for generations, meaning that a silverware set can hold a great deal of sentimental value as well. This means that you need to make sure that you properly prepare your silverware set for moving day to ensure that it does not become damaged while in transit.

What You'll Need

Before you start packing, gather up all of the materials that you'll be using to pack your silverware to speed the process up as much as possible. You'll need packing paper, plastic wrap, silver polish, a lint free rag, painter's tape, a silverware tray, and a box large enough to fit the silverware tray snugly inside of it. All of these items can be found at a moving or storage supply store, with the exception of the silverware tray and silver polish, which can be found at most kitchenware stores.

Packing Silverware for a Move

First, you'll want to make sure that your silverware is clean of all food debris and possible contaminants before you pack it. Wash it thoroughly by hand with soap and warm water.

Once your silverware has dried, you should make use of the lint free rag and silver polish to polish your silverware. This will prevent any tarnishing from occurring while your utensils are packed away.

Then, sort your silverware by utensils in the silverware tray. Stacking the same utensils in the same slots of the tray can help you save space. Fill up any empty space in the tray with crushed packing paper, which will provide cushioning to your silverware.

Then, use the plastic wrap to completely wrap the tray several times. The wrap will stick to itself, so you won't need to use any tape to secure the tray.

Then, place the tray inside the cardboard box. If there is any gap between the wrapped tray and the outside of the box, you'll want to stuff packing paper in to prevent the tray from shifting and the silverware from spilling out.

Mark the box clearly with a marker to indicate that it contains your silverware to make the unpacking process as painless as possible, and then simply seal the box up with painter's tape. You're now ready to load your silverware and get on with your move.
